=Protest against
Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Evacuation Lawsuit Ruling=
In March 2011,
people who evacuated due to the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant filed lawsuits seeking damages from Tokyo
Electric Power Company and the government. On June 17, 2022, four lawsuits
filed in Chiba Prefecture, Gunma Prefecture, and other areas were ruled in the
courts denying the government's liability for compensation. (The Supreme Court
ruled that the accident could have occurred even if tsunami countermeasures had
been taken, and therefore the government was not responsible.)
Three years
later, just like last year, people formed a human chain around the Supreme
Court grounds in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward to protest against the Supreme Court
ruling.
About 1,150
participants held hands for one kilometer under the scorching sun, chanting
slogans such as "Where has the independence of the judiciary gone?",
"The nuclear accident is the government's responsibility" and
"Make a decision that we can be proud of in the future," and raised
their angry fists toward the Supreme Court.
Even now, many
people are unable to return to their hometowns, and the problem of contaminated
soil has not been resolved. 14 years have passed since the accident, and I
think the government should take responsibility and work to resolve the issue,
rather than letting it be forgotten with the passage of time.
