三井砂川炭鉱
北海道空知郡上砂川町にある三井砂川炭鉱は１９８７年３月に閉山を迎えようとしていた。私は雪深い２月に現地を訪れた。
倉本聡のミュージカル「昨日、悲別で」の舞台になった悲別駅（上砂川駅）を降りると、正にそこは、炭鉱の町であった。駅に隣接した、炭鉱施設に山積みされた石炭は、そこからすぐに貨車に載せられるようになっていた。
役場の人に案内されて、各施設を回った。歴史のある炭鉱の施設は歴史の趣が随所に出ていた。しかし、１ヵ月後には、炭鉱の閉山が予定されているため、既に町を去った人も多く、駅前の喫茶店では、これからどうなるのか心配する人たちの会話が聞こえてきた。
空き家が多くなった炭住（炭鉱住宅）のある地区では、雪でスッポリ埋もれ、静かさが漂っていた。そして、炭鉱の労働組合の事務所には閉山反対のポスターが貼ってあったが、現実は止めようがない様子であった。
閉山すると町の8割方は転居してしまい人口減により、商業も成り立たなくなる。そして、三井が撤退すると町全体が成り立たなくなりそうである。
脱石炭を図るため、既に町は1980年9月にカナダ、ブリティッシュコロンビア州スーパーウッド町と姉妹都市関係を結んで「カナダランド構想」が進んでいたが、炭鉱の閉山と大幅な人口減は税収減につながる･･･。
そんな思いの中、私は炭鉱の街、上砂川町を歩いて回った。（１９８７年２月９〜１１日）
The Mitsui Sunagawa coal mine in Kamisunagawacho
was going to greet closing a mountain in Sorachi-gun, Hokkaido in March, 1987.
And I visited the actual place in
February when snow was deep.
There was right
a town of a coal mine a musical of Kuramoto So "yesterday when I went down
Kanasibetu Station （Kamisunagawa
Station） which became
the stage in Kanasibetu ".
The coal that a big pile was considered
to be the coal mine institution which was next to a station became pick up on a
freight train immediately from there.
It was informed a person of a government
office, and attraction with the history left the institution of a coal mine
everywhere when I went around each institution.
However, I heard conversation of people
to worry about how was a lot of people who already left a town in a coffee shop
of the station square from now on so that closing a mountain of a coal mine was
planned one month later.
It was snowy and, in a district with a
coal mine house with many unoccupied houses, was unknown, and there was
quietness.
And a closing a mountain opposite poster
was put on an office of a labor union of a coal mine, but it looked like
reality cannot leave it.
More than 80% of the whole town are land
of Mitsui, and all such as a government office / the police / a fire department
/ a supermarket the land of a main building seems to stand on land of Mitsui
when I try to hear circumstances in a town office.
About 800
staffs of the mining industry place. In addition, 250 contract employees,
facilities out of pit-related 200, transport / construction relation 320 work
in Sunagawa coal mine, and 6500 of 73% are related among a population of 8900
of a town when I can include a family.
The side of 80% of a town moves when
closed, and, by population decrease, commerce does not make ends meet. And the
whole town does not seem to make ends meet when Mitsui withdraws.
A town already binds Canada, British Columbia super Wood-town and sister
city relation together in September, 1980, and "Canada land design"
advanced to plan de-coal, but large population decrease is connected for
the yield of taxes decrease with closing a mountain of a coal mine.
In such a thought, I went around Sunagawacho on foot in a town of a coal
mine. (for February,9〜11. 1987)

上砂川小学校の向こうに第一竪坑が見える。小学校の校庭から見た炭鉱マンの住宅（空家が多かった）
一戸建ての炭住；雪に埋もれる炭住、空家も多く、役場の人の話では「暖房に石炭を使わないで、
石油・LPGガスを使用する家庭が多くなった」そうです。（炭ガラがでるから）
労働組合は、突然の閉山発表に、強力な阻止闘争を戦い抜く様子です。
