アウシュビッツ第一収容所から約３Ｋｍ離れたブジェジンカ村のビルケナウ収容所は、約５３万坪の土地に造られた虐殺のための施設で、囚人を列車から降ろして、そのままガス室～焼却場に送る設備や人体実験場があったとされる施設だ。

今では収容所の正門のある煉瓦造りの建物と囚人たちを運んだ鉄道の引き込み線が残るだけだ。雪で覆われた広大な大地に囚人たちの当時の木造のバラックは焼却・破壊され既にない。そして、マイナス２０℃にならないと使用できなかった無数の煉瓦造りの暖炉の煙突と正門につながる二本の線路が虚しさを誘いマイナス１８℃の寒さが身にしみた。

ポーランドのオシフィエンチム市で、７０年前に起きたナチスＳＳによる残虐な行為は、人間の仕業とは思えない。どうしてここまで残虐な殺し方ができるのか、戦争を大義とした、ナチスによる民族血統主義の狂気の沙汰なのだろうか…。理解に苦しむ！　私はこの地で世界の平和を祈った。
