On
November 18, 1978, a local diver discovered the plane 41 meters under the sea
in Kura Bay, Minamiuwa District, Ehime
Prefecture, intact, and on July 14 of the following year, it was salvaged after
34 years.
The plane
was covered in barnacles and had many damaged areas, but it still retained its
original shape.
Shinmeiwa
Industry Co., Ltd. (formerly Kawanishi Air), which produced the Shiden Kai,
spent about a month repairing it and applying anti-rust paint.
The Shiden Kai was developed near the end of the war as a cutting-edge
aircraft to replace the Zero Fighter, and is said to have been the Navy's
most outstanding fighter plane. It is the only one still in existence in
Japan.
This aircraft belonged to the 343rd Air Group (Tsurugi Unit), an elite
unit equipped with highly skilled pilots and local fighter aircraft Shiden
and Shiden Kai from the former Matsuyama Naval Air Base. On July 24, 1945,
towards the end of the war, it was one of the aircraft that engaged in
combat with US military aircraft over the Bungo Channel; of the 21 aircraft
that took off from Matsuyama Air Base, six did not return after the engagement.
It was
determined to be one of these planes, but the aircraft number could not be
determined due to damage, and at the request of the families of the six who
died in the war, photographs of the six men along with folded paper cranes are
displayed in front of the aircraft.
