University History Exhibition Hall "Modernity and War in a Family" =
Yoshiharu Uehara, Tatsuo, Ryoji and their families
The exhibition,
planned and organized by Professor Takeyuki Tokura of the Keio University
Fukuzawa Research Center, who continues to research the Uehara family, features
photographs and handwritten documents of the family, showing what the war
brought to the family of Torataro Uehara (a doctor), an old family in Azumino
City, Nagano Prefecture.
Ryoji
Uehara, a kamikaze pilot who died in battle at the age of 22 in May 1945, and
his two older brothers, Yoshiharu and Tatsuo Uehara (both military doctors),
also died in the war. Yoshiharu, the eldest, died of malaria on the battlefield
after the war ended. His second son, Tatsuo, was killed in 1943 when the
submarine he was on was sunk. All three studied at Keio University. (Ryoji was
a student soldier.)
Three of the five children in the family of Torataro Uehara (a doctor)
from Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, died, leaving two younger sisters.
The surviving youngest daughter, Toshie, spoke at a special roundtable
discussion held on the same day, "The Uehara Family, Testimony 80
Years Later." She said, "I don't remember hearing my parents
talk about my brothers at home. They must have been too sad to speak out.
It was like they had it bottled up inside them.
She
also said, "We must never start a war again."

Ryoji Uehara, who was a student at Keio University when he was drafted
into the military, has written the following passage in the memoir of a
student who died in the war, "Listen to the Voices of the Sea,"
which he wrote on the eve of his suicide mission: "Tomorrow a liberal
will leave this world."
Also,
near the Chiran Army Special Attack Base in Kyushu, Tomiya Shokudo, a
restaurant frequented by kamikaze pilots and run by Torihama Tome, who was
loved as the "mother of the kamikaze pilots," has been restored and
turned into a museum called Hotarukan, where the interior of the restaurant has
been recreated as it was at the time and where the suicide notes and
photographs of the pilots are on display.
