Kakazu
Ridge
In 1945,
U.S. Marines made an unopposed landing at Yomitan Village, visible in the
background of the photo above.
The
Japanese military had decided to forgo a "water's edge" defense
strategy in favor of intercepting the enemy here; consequently, U.S. forces
encountered fierce resistance from the Japanese troops for the first time.
Looking
north from the observation deck, one can clearly see why this location was a
strategic defensive stronghold. It is astonishing to think that such a violent
battle took place in an area that is now a residential neighborhood. (Visible
in the background to the right of the photo is the U.S. Marine Corps Air
Station Futenma.)
*Kakazu
Ridge is located about a 20-minute drive from the Nishihara Interchange on the
Okinawa Expressway and is surrounded by Kakazu Takadai Park.

Former
Imperial Japanese Army 32nd Army Headquarters Tunnel
The
Army's 32nd Army, responsible for the defense of Okinawa, constructed a
concrete-reinforced tunnel complex beneath Shuri Castle in preparation for a
decisive battle and relocated its headquarters there in January 1945. This
robust structure featured six entrances and extended for one kilometer; it was
said to be strong enough to withstand even one-ton bombs. The command directed
the Battle of Okinawa from this location, but as U.S. forces closed in, they
withdrew to Mabuni—at the southernmost tip of the main island—on May 22.
Today,
the tunnel entrances are completely sealed off, and the site sees no visitors.
Furthermore, there is no explicit mention of the tunnel's existence at Shuri
Castle itself; there is merely a small signboard standing near one of the
tunnel's entrances.
*Note:
The former 32nd Army Headquarters Tunnel is located near Enkanchi Pond, to the
left of Shuri Castle, rather than inside the castle grounds via the Shureimon
Gate. If you are touring Shuri Castle, it is situated in the area downhill from
Kyukeimon Gate, which serves as the final exit. (As the location is difficult
to find, it is best to ask the staff at the Shuri Castle exit for directions.)

Former
Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters
This
bunker was excavated by a Navy construction unit in December 1944 and served as
the headquarters for the Navy's Okinawa Base Force.
It
consisted of tunnels dug in a semi-cylindrical (quonset-hut) shape, reinforced
with concrete and timber supports, and is said to have spanned a total length
of 450 meters. Designed for a protracted defense, the bunker housed
approximately 4,000 soldiers, forcing them to sleep while standing.
As the
U.S. military—possessing overwhelming firepower—continued its advance and the
Army retreated to the south, Commander Minoru Ota and his troops ultimately
took their own lives on June 13, 1945.
Although
the site was left abandoned for a time after the war, remains were recovered
over several operations. In 1970, a 300-meter section—centered on the
commander's office—was restored and opened to the public.

Haebaru
Army Hospital Tunnels
The
Okinawa Army Hospital, under the direct command of the 32nd Army (Okinawa
Defense Force), was initially distributed across several locations: its
headquarters, internal medicine department, and infectious disease department
were at Kainan Junior High School in Naha; the surgery department was at
Saiseikai Hospital; and barracks were located at the Prefectural Second Junior
High School. The hospital director was Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps)
Bunkichi Hiroike, and the staff consisted of over 300 personnel, including
medical officers, nurses, and medics.
However,
after the facilities were destroyed by fire during the air raid on October 10,
1944, the hospital relocated to Haebaru National School, where a Haebaru branch
facility already existed. When U.S. air raids began on March 23, 1945, 237
students and supervising teachers from the Women's Division of the Okinawa
Normal School and the Prefectural First Girls' High School were mobilized to
assist with nursing duties. After the war, they came to be known as the
"Himeyuri Student Corps."
Facing
the imminent U.S. landing, the hospital moved into more than 30 tunnels
(collectively known as the Haebaru Army Hospital Tunnels) that had been
excavated in the Kogane-mori area. The departments were redesignated: the
surgery department became "Surgery No. 1," internal medicine became
"Surgery No. 2," and the infectious disease department became
"Surgery No. 3."
On May
22, the 32nd Army Headquarters, located beneath Shuri Castle, withdrew to
Mabuni, and the Army Hospital was also ordered to move south. During this
evacuation, potassium cyanide was distributed to critically ill patients in
some tunnels, forcing them to commit suicide. Although the monument at the site
bears the inscription "Site of the Suicides of Over 2,000 Critically Ill Patients,"
this figure lacks a factual basis, and the exact number of victims remains
unclear.

Haebaru Army Hospital Tunnels are located near Kogane-mori Park in Haebaru
Town; the Haebaru Cultural Center provides detailed information about the site.

Abuchiragama (Itokazu Cave)
Abuchiragama
is a natural cave located in the Itokazu district of Tamagusuku, Nanjo City, on
the main island of Okinawa. During the Battle of Okinawa, it was originally
designated as a shelter for the residents of Itokazu village; however, it was
subsequently used by the Japanese military as a fortified position and a supply
depot. As the battlefront shifted southward, it became an annex of the Haebaru
Army Hospital. Military doctors, nurses, and the Himeyuri Student Corps were stationed
there, and the 270-meter-long cave was packed with over 600 wounded soldiers.
Following
the order to retreat to the south issued on May 25, 1945, and the subsequent
withdrawal of the hospital staff, the cave became a shared space for Itokazu
residents, surviving wounded soldiers, and other Japanese troops. Finally, on
August 22, the residents and wounded soldiers emerged from the cave in response
to a call for surrender from the U.S. military.
* The cave is located near the "Southern Tourism Information Center"
(near the Itokazu Castle ruins). Visitors must purchase an admission ticket
(250 yen for adults) and rent a flashlight (100 yen usage fee) at the center
before entering. The cave remains largely in its original state and is
pitch-black inside, as there is no artificial lighting. The ground is also
slippery, so visitors must exercise great caution while exploring
* It is highly recommended to arrange for a
guide (reservation required) to explain the site, as this provides a much
deeper understanding of the events that took place there.

The Himeyuri Tower
The
Himeyuri Peace Museum was established in June 1989 by the Himeyuri Alumnae
Association (representing the Okinawa Prefectural Women's Normal School and the
Okinawa Prefectural First Girls' High School). The museum's founding purpose is
described in its brochure as follows:
"The U.S. military positioned the Battle of Okinawa as a critical
operation to secure a foothold for the invasion of the Japanese mainland,
deploying its full material might. In response, the Japanese military adopted
a strategy of defensive attrition from within underground tunnels, aiming
to delay a U.S. landing on the mainland by even a single day. To defend
Okinawa, the Japanese military orchestrated a 'total mobilization' of the
local population and forcibly mobilized student corps, sending young students
to the battlefield. These strategies of attrition and total mobilization
resulted in the deaths of more than 120,000 Okinawan civilians.
More than forty years have passed since then, yet the horrors of the battlefield remain etched in our minds. We have not forgotten the terrifying nature of the education of that era—an education that instilled no doubts in us but instead actively drove us toward the battlefield." (June 1989)

On March
6, 1945, 56 fourth-year students from the Okinawa Prefectural Second Girls'
High School were inducted into the Nursing Training Unit of the 24th Division's
1st Field Hospital, based at Kochinda National School, where they began
intensive training. When U.S. naval bombardment commenced, they were assigned
to the 1st Field Hospital—a mountain unit located on Mt. Yaese in Kochinda
Village.
On June 4, as the war situation deteriorated, they received orders for
the unit's disbandment; while wandering amidst the ground combat that ensued,
22 of the students lost their lives. Ten of the casualties occurred among
the students who had rejoined the hospital after it retreated to this location.
Due to the white plum blossom design on their school badge, they came to
be known after the war as the "Shiraume (White Plum) Student Corps.

Cape Kyan
Cape Kyan
is located at the southernmost tip of Okinawa's main island, overlooking a vast
expanse of deep blue sea. Before the water lie rugged, sheer cliffs carved by
wind and waves. During the final stages of the Battle of Okinawa, this
beautiful sea was filled with U.S. warships. Cornered by American forces with
nowhere left to turn, civilians and soldiers alike threw themselves from these
cliffs one after another; it is said that the sea turned entirely red with
blood. Much like the "Banzai Cliffs" of Iwo Jima and Saipan, this
site witnessed a similar tragedy—a consequence of the militaristic ideology
that held it was a disgrace to be taken prisoner.

May 1945, under the pressure of a fierce U.S. offensive, the headquarters of
the Imperial Japanese Army's 32nd Army abandoned Shuri and retreated via
Haebaru to Mabuni, located at the southernmost tip of the main island. Finally,
on June 23, Lieutenant General Ushijima—the commanding officer—and his staff

To widely
convey—both at home and abroad—the "spirit of peace" cultivated
within the history and climate of Okinawa, and to pray for lasting global peace,
the "Cornerstone of Peace" monument was constructed to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of the end of the Pacific War and the Battle of Okinawa.
It bears the names of all those who lost their lives in the Battle of Okinawa,
regardless of nationality, military status, or civilian status. (1995)
The
monument is inscribed with the names of approximately 240,000 individuals;
these include not only people of various nationalities and backgrounds—both

defining characteristic of the Battle of Okinawa.
Okinawa
Normal School Men's Division (Normal School Iron and Blood Imperial Corps)
Students
from the Men's Division of the Normal School were assigned to various units
under the command of the Okinawa Defense Army (32nd Army). They performed
rear-echelon duties, such as information operations designed to convince local
residents of an impending victory.
In late
May, as the war situation deteriorated, the unit retreated to the Mabuni area.
Although an order to disband was issued in late June, they were unable to break
through the U.S. military's encirclement, resulting in heavy casualties.
Of the 24
teachers and 386 students mobilized, 9 teachers and 226 students were killed in
action. In addition to the student corps members, 10 other teachers and 64
students conscripted for military service also lost their lives, bringing the
total death toll to 309.

<Purpose
of the Tsushima-maru Memorial Museum>
In 1944,
as the footsteps of war drew ever closer, the people of Okinawa were ordered to
evacuate to other prefectures. On August 21, the *Tsushima-maru* departed Naha
Port carrying many evacuees—most notably groups of schoolchildren participating
in organized evacuations. However, the seas had already become a battlefield;
shortly after 10:00 p.m. on the following day, August 22, the *Tsushima-maru*
was sunk by the U.S. submarine *Bowfin*. Approximately 80 percent of the 1,788
people on board—including crew members and soldiers—perished at sea. (Source:

The
Tsushima-maru Memorial Museum opened in Asahigaoka Park, Naha City, in August
2004 with the aim of sharing the memory of this history and conveying the
importance of peace and human life from the perspective of children.

The
"Kozakura-no-To" (Cherry Blossom Tower) Memorial
Located
in Asahigaoka Park, behind the Tsushima-maru Memorial Museum, stands the
"Kozakura-no-To" (Cherry Blossom Tower), a memorial dedicated to the
victims of the *Tsushima-maru*.
This
monument was realized through the efforts of the Suzushiro Children's Association
in Aichi Prefecture. Motivated by the fact that there was no memorial for the
children in Okinawa, they launched a "one-yen" fundraising campaign
and, with significant support from the Governor of Aichi and others in the
prefecture, succeeded in having the monument built in Okinawa.
High
Priest Yoshiaki Nako of Naminouesan Gokoku-ji Temple played a pivotal role in
the project, and the unveiling ceremony took place on Children's Day—May 5,
1953.
The tower
stands on the opposite side of the Tsushima-maru Memorial Museum from the
Asahigaoka Park observation deck, with its bow facing Naha Port.
